   the background, the fire crackles from the fireplace, your cat purrs in
   your lap,  and a glass of  Chablis  mellows on the end table beside you.

   @X0FSuddenly, your entire world is upthrust as an earthquake hits with
   astounding force!  @X02The silence is shattered by a roaring as if from a
   thousand racing trains.  Thirty seconds seem like thirty days and by the
   time the shaking stops, you feel as if you have aged ten years.  The
   power flickers, but doesn't fail and within minutes, a news bulletin
   flashes over the television screen.  Moments later, CNN news crews scramble
   to CalTech and Kate Hutton appears on your screen.

   @X0FYou know then that the phone will ring.  @X02You are a seismologist
   and though you are now doing other things, you just @X0FKNOW @X02that they
   are gonna drag you out of retirement for this one.  As you consider that
   fact, another earthquake rips your world apart.  Your phone rings.  Your
   electricity fails.  You are all alone in an unstable world.
